Almost every new car sold in America today is competent, safe and reasonably efficient. That makes shopping harder, not easier: the differences that matter are rarely the ones the brochure leads with. This site is built to help you get from a vague budget to a short list of two or three cars you should actually go and drive.

Start with the out-the-door price

Prices on this site are starting MSRP, because that is the only number comparable across states. What you pay depends on your local sales-tax rate, title and registration, and a dealer documentation fee that varies enormously by state. Our city pages run that calculation for the metros we cover so you can see a realistic total rather than a sticker.

Pick the body style before the badge

Most shoppers start with a brand. It is usually more productive to start with the job: how many people, how much cargo, how long the commute, whether you tow, whether winter weather is a factor. Let that choose the body style, then compare everything in that style within your budget. Brand loyalty is the most expensive habit in car buying.

Compare two or three cars, not ten

The comparison tool earns its keep once you have a genuine short list. Compare the specific trims you would actually buy, a base model against a loaded rival tells you nothing, and read the full specification groups rather than the headline horsepower figure. Cargo volume, rear legroom and real-world fuel economy predict satisfaction far better.
