Chevrolet Equinox review

The Chevrolet Equinox is Chevy's bread-and-butter compact SUV, redesigned for 2025 with sharper styling borrowed from its electric sibling. It targets buyers who want practical family transport without crossing into premium pricing. A single turbocharged engine handles every trim, paired with a roomy cabin, a big standard touchscreen, and the option of all-wheel drive. It won't thrill enthusiasts, but it nails the everyday basics that most shoppers actually prioritize.

On the road, the Equinox is calm rather than quick. Its 1.5-liter turbo four produces 175 horsepower, which is adequate for commuting and highway merging but feels strained when fully loaded or climbing grades. The standard continuously variable transmission keeps revs efficient but can drone under hard acceleration. Ride quality is the real strength here: the suspension soaks up rough pavement well, and the cabin stays reasonably quiet at cruising speeds.

Inside, Chevrolet has clearly prioritized perceived value. An 11.0-inch touchscreen comes standard, running Google built-in software with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on most trims. Material quality is acceptable for the class, with soft-touch surfaces where your arms rest and harder plastics lower down. Rear-seat space is genuinely generous for a compact, and the cargo area is competitive, making it a sensible choice for small families.

Safety and driver assistance are well covered, with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and a following-distance indicator included even at the base level. The available Super Cruise hands-free highway driving system, offered on higher trims, is a feature rivals struggle to match at this price. Fuel economy of roughly 28 mpg combined is respectable but not class-leading, and there's no hybrid option, which is a notable gap as competitors push electrification.

The Equinox ultimately makes its case on packaging and price rather than driving excitement. Buyers cross-shopping a RAV4 or CR-V will find the Chevy slightly less refined and less efficient, but often better equipped for the money, especially in mid-grade trims.

Our verdict — The Equinox is a smart pick for value-focused families who want generous space, modern tech, and available hands-free driving without paying premium money. It's not the most efficient or engaging compact SUV, but the overall package is hard to argue with on price.

Great space for the price

I cross-shopped the CR-V and Tucson and the Equinox just gave me more room and screen for the money. The engine isn't fast but it's fine for my daily commute. Wish it got a couple more mpg on the highway.

Super Cruise sold me

Hands-free driving on road trips is a game changer and I didn't expect it at this price. The interior feels nicer than I assumed a Chevy would. My only gripe is the transmission gets loud when I push it.

Solid but not exciting

It does everything a family SUV should without drama. The ride is comfy and the tech works well, but I sometimes wish there was a hybrid option for my city driving. Acceleration is just okay when the car is full.

Alternatives to the Chevrolet Equinox

Chevrolet Equinox — frequently asked questions

Does the Chevrolet Equinox offer all-wheel drive?

Yes. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available on most trims for an additional cost, which is worth considering in snowy or wet climates.

Is there a hybrid or electric Equinox?

The gas Equinox covered here is petrol-only. Chevrolet sells a separate, distinctly styled Equinox EV as its own model, but there is no gas-hybrid version of this SUV.

How many people can the Equinox seat?

It seats five across two rows. There is no third-row option, so buyers needing six or seven seats should look at a larger SUV.

What kind of fuel economy should I expect?

Expect around 28 mpg combined with front-wheel drive, with all-wheel-drive models returning slightly less. Real-world highway figures are competitive but not best in class.

What is Super Cruise and which trims have it?

Super Cruise is a hands-free driver-assistance system for compatible highways. It's available on higher trims, typically as part of an option package rather than standard equipment.

How much cargo space does it have?

The Equinox offers a competitive cargo area behind the rear seats that expands significantly when they're folded, making it practical for groceries, strollers, and weekend gear.
