Skoda Kushaq review

The Skoda Kushaq is the brand's mid-size SUV built on the India-focused MQB-A0-IN platform. It pairs two turbo-petrol engines with a famously planted European chassis, aiming squarely at buyers who value driving feel and build solidity over outright feature counts. Roomy for four, simple to live with and backed by strong crash protection, it carved out a loyal following despite a thinner equipment list than some rivals offer at similar money.

On the move, the Kushaq is where Skoda earns its keep. The chassis feels mature and confidence-inspiring, soaking up broken roads with a firm-but-fair ride while staying composed through fast corners. The 1.0 TSI is enough for most family duties, but the 1.5 TSI with its cylinder-deactivation tech transforms the car, offering genuinely quick, refined performance that few rivals in this segment can match. Both engines are eager and smooth, and the DSG automatic on the 1.5 is a slick partner.

Inside, the cabin is sensibly laid out with honest materials and a logical dashboard. The 10-inch touchscreen is responsive and ventilated seats are welcome in Indian summers, but the equipment sheet does feel dated next to Korean and home-grown rivals. You won't find a 360-degree camera, ADAS, or a digital instrument cluster on most variants, and rear-seat space, while adequate, trails the roomiest competitors.

Where the Kushaq strikes back is substance. The doors thunk shut, the switchgear feels built to last, and the five-star Global NCAP rating gives real peace of mind. Skoda's after-sales reputation has improved markedly, with fixed service costs and wider reach, though it still isn't as dense as Maruti or Hyundai networks.

Fuel economy is reasonable rather than class-leading, and the petrol-only line-up may deter high-mileage diesel seekers. But for the buyer who actually enjoys driving and wants a solid, safe SUV that feels a cut above on the road, the Kushaq remains a compelling and slightly under-appreciated choice.

Our verdict — If driving dynamics, build quality and safety top your list, the Kushaq is one of the most rounded mid-size SUVs you can buy. Skip it if you crave the longest feature list or a diesel option; choose it if you value how a car feels over how it spec-sheets.

Drives like a proper European car

The handling and high-speed stability are in a different league from what I test-drove before this. The 1.5 DSG is genuinely fun and still returns decent mileage on the highway. Only wish it had a few more features for the price.

Safe and solid family SUV

Bought it mainly for the five-star safety rating and the build quality, and I'm not disappointed. Ride quality on bad roads is excellent. Rear seat is a bit tight for three adults on long trips, though.

Great car, average service experience

No complaints with the car itself, the 1.0 TSI is peppy in the city and reliable so far. My only gripe is that the nearest Skoda service centre is far and appointments can take time. Otherwise a very satisfying ownership.

Alternatives to the Skoda Kushaq

Skoda Kushaq — frequently asked questions

Does the Skoda Kushaq come with a diesel engine?

No. The Kushaq is offered only with petrol engines, the 1.0 TSI and the more powerful 1.5 TSI. There is no diesel, CNG or hybrid option.

Which engine should I choose, the 1.0 or 1.5 TSI?

The 1.0 TSI is ample for city and occasional highway use and is more affordable. Pick the 1.5 TSI DSG if you want noticeably stronger performance and refinement and don't mind paying a premium.

How safe is the Kushaq?

Very safe. It earned a five-star adult occupant rating in Global NCAP crash testing and comes with six airbags, ESC and ISOFIX mounts across the higher trims.

What is the real-world mileage?

Expect roughly 14-16 kmpl in city driving and 17-19 kmpl on highways for the 1.0 TSI. The 1.5 TSI with cylinder deactivation can match or slightly better this on the open road.

Is the Kushaq good for a family of four?

Yes. It comfortably seats four adults with a usable 385-litre boot. Three adults in the rear on long journeys is workable but a little snug compared with some rivals.

How does it compare to the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos?

The Kushaq drives better and feels more solidly built, but the Creta and Seltos offer more features, more cabin space and a diesel option. Your priority between dynamics and equipment should decide it.
