Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara
Strong-hybrid SUV that sips, not guzzles
Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara review
The Grand Vitara is Maruti Suzuki's mid-size SUV, built jointly with Toyota and sharing its core with the Urban Cruiser Hyderza. It stands out for offering a Toyota-derived strong-hybrid option alongside a regular mild-hybrid petrol and a factory CNG choice. Aimed squarely at the Creta and Seltos, it leans on fuel efficiency, a comfortable cabin and Maruti's vast service reach rather than outright power or rugged off-road ability.
On the road, the Grand Vitara feels tuned for everyday calm rather than excitement. The 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol is adequate around town but runs out of breath on quick highway overtakes, and the four-speed torque-converter automatic paired with it feels dated against rivals' smoother gearboxes. The strong-hybrid is the more interesting buy: it glides off the line on electric power, stays silent in traffic, and returns genuinely high real-world economy, though its e-CVT can drone under hard acceleration.
The cabin is the car's strong suit. Front seats are supportive, the dashboard layout is clean, and the panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, head-up display and 360-degree camera on top variants feel a class above Maruti's usual fare. Rear-seat space is good for two adults, and ride quality stays composed over broken roads. Boot space is reasonable on petrol versions but shrinks noticeably in the strong-hybrid because of the battery pack under the floor.
Where it lags is engagement and equipment depth. There's no diesel and no powerful turbo-petrol, so enthusiasts will find it flat. The infotainment, while feature-rich, can lag, and some plastics feel ordinary for the price. Safety has improved with six airbags, ESP and a decent Global NCAP showing, but it isn't class-leading on driver-assistance tech.
Value depends on the variant. The mild-hybrid undercuts rivals nicely, while the strong-hybrid commands a premium that only makes sense if you drive enough kilometres to recover it through fuel savings.

Mileage king for city driving
I bought the strong-hybrid mainly for my daily commute and it regularly gives me over 24 kmpl in Bangalore traffic. The silent electric crawl in jams is a blessing. Only gripe is the boot got smaller, so weekend luggage planning takes effort.
Comfortable but not quick
As a family SUV it ticks all the boxes — comfy seats, sunroof and a nice cabin. The mild-hybrid automatic feels slow on highways though, and you really have to plan overtakes. Service experience at Nexa has been smooth so far.
Great economy, average tech
Fuel bills have dropped a lot compared to my old petrol sedan. But the touchscreen lags sometimes and I wish it had a more powerful engine option. For the price, the features list could have been richer.

Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara — frequently asked questions
Does the Grand Vitara come with a diesel engine?
No. It is offered only with petrol options — a 1.5L mild-hybrid, a 1.5L strong-hybrid, and a factory-fitted CNG variant. There is no diesel.
Which variant gives the best fuel economy?
The strong-hybrid (e-CVT) is the most efficient, with a claimed figure of around 27.97 kmpl. Real-world city economy typically lands in the low-to-mid 20s.
Is the Grand Vitara available with all-wheel drive?
Yes, Maruti offers an AllGrip all-wheel-drive option on select mild-hybrid manual variants, though most buyers choose the front-wheel-drive versions.
How is the boot space?
Petrol variants offer a usable boot of around 373 litres, but the strong-hybrid's underfloor battery reduces it to roughly 265 litres.
How many airbags does it have?
Six airbags are standard across the range, along with ABS with EBD, ESP and ISOFIX child-seat mounts.
Is the strong-hybrid worth the extra cost?
It makes sense for high-mileage drivers who can recover the price premium through fuel savings. For lighter usage, the mild-hybrid offers better overall value.
