Kia Sportage
Bold styling meets practical compact-SUV value
Kia Sportage review
The Kia Sportage was completely redesigned for 2023, trading its previous understated shape for one of the boldest faces in the compact-SUV class. It now offers gas, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid powertrains, plus a roomy cabin and a large dual-screen dashboard. With sharp pricing, a long warranty, and genuinely useful rear-seat and cargo space, it competes head-on with the segment's best-sellers while standing out visually.
The fifth-generation Sportage is the most ambitious version Kia has built. Its split headlights, boomerang running lights, and wide grille make it instantly recognizable, and the longer wheelbase translates into class-leading rear legroom and a deep, square cargo hold. Inside, higher trims get a curved panel housing two 12.3-inch screens, while base trims use smaller, simpler displays. Material quality is solid for the price, though some lower cabin plastics feel ordinary.
The standard 2.5-liter gas engine making 187 hp is adequate rather than quick, paired with a smooth eight-speed automatic. It's the hybrid that makes the strongest case: 227 combined horsepower, noticeably stronger response, and roughly 43 MPG combined make it both faster and far more efficient than the base car. The plug-in hybrid adds around 34 miles of electric range for buyers who can charge at home. Front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is optional on gas trims and standard on most hybrids.
On the road the Sportage prioritizes comfort over sport. The ride is settled, the steering is light, and road noise is well controlled for the class. It isn't as engaging as a Mazda CX-5, but most buyers will appreciate the relaxed character. Driver-assistance features are generous even on lower trims, with adaptive cruise, lane centering, and forward-collision braking widely available.
Value remains the Sportage's core strength. Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, competitive pricing, and strong feature content per dollar make it easy to recommend. The main trade-offs are an unremarkable base engine and a few cost-cut interior touches, but neither undermines what is otherwise a well-rounded family SUV.

Owner reviews
The hybrid is the one to get
I averaged about 42 MPG on my commute, which is incredible for an SUV this size. It's not a sports car, but it has plenty of pep around town and the back seat easily fits my two kids and their gear.
Looks great, drives easy
Everyone comments on the front-end styling. The big screens are easy to use and the ride is really comfortable on long trips. My only gripe is some of the plastic near the doors feels cheap for the price.
Solid value, base engine is meh
I bought the base gas LX and wish I'd stretched for the hybrid. It gets the job done but feels slow merging onto the highway. Everything else, the space, the warranty, the features, has been great.
