Tata Nexon
India's best-selling SUV, safety-first
Tata Nexon review
The Tata Nexon helped define the sub-4-metre SUV space in India and remains one of its biggest sellers. The current facelifted generation brings sharper, more polished styling, a thoroughly modernised cabin and a long features list. But what really anchors its appeal is its 5-star Global NCAP crash record, which has made it the default choice for buyers who put family safety near the top of their list when shopping in this segment.
On the road the Nexon feels grown-up for a compact SUV. The 1.2-litre turbo-petrol is the pick of the range, with a useful surge of mid-range pull that makes city driving relaxed and overtakes on the highway drama-free. The diesel is the long-distance specialist, returning genuinely strong economy and a torquey, unstressed character. Three gearbox options — a 6-speed manual, a 6-speed AMT and a quicker-witted 7-speed dual-clutch automatic — mean there is a Nexon to suit most driving styles, though the DCT can feel hesitant in slow crawling traffic.
The cabin is where the facelift makes its biggest leap. A large free-standing touchscreen, a fully digital instrument cluster on higher trims, ventilated front seats, a single-pane sunroof and a touch-based climate panel give it a genuinely premium ambience that embarrasses some pricier cars. Space is good for four adults, the boot is usefully shaped, and ride quality is mature — the Nexon soaks up broken roads and speed breakers with composure rather than crashing into them.
It is not flawless. The touch-sensitive climate controls are fiddly while driving, rear-seat under-thigh support is average for taller passengers, and some of the lower-trim plastics still feel ordinary. Tata's software and connected-car features have improved but can occasionally lag, and service experience varies by city and dealer.
What the Nexon does better than almost anyone, though, is build confidence. The solid structure, the 5-star crash rating, the standard six airbags on most variants and the long warranty add up to a car you can hand to a family member without a second thought. For many buyers that reassurance, combined with the strong features and value, simply outweighs the rough edges.

Owner reviews
Bought it for the safety, stayed for the drive
I shortlisted it purely for the 5-star rating, but the turbo-petrol genuinely surprised me on highways. City mileage hovers around 12-13 kmpl with the AC on, which is fair for a turbo. The build feels rock solid over our terrible roads.
Great family car with a few niggles
The cabin feels premium and my kids love the sunroof and ventilated seats. My only real complaints are the touch climate controls, which are distracting while driving, and the occasional lag in the screen. Service at my dealer has been decent so far.
Diesel mileage is the real hero
I do a lot of intercity running and the diesel comfortably returns 20-plus on the highway. It is refined and torquey, never feels strained with a full load. The DCT-equivalent is smooth on the open road but I do feel slight hesitation in stop-go traffic.

Tata Nexon — frequently asked questions
Is the Tata Nexon safe?
Yes. The current-generation Nexon carries a 5-star Global NCAP rating for adult occupant protection, and most variants come with six airbags, ABS with EBD and electronic stability control as standard, making it one of the safest options in its class.
Which Nexon engine should I buy — petrol or diesel?
Choose the 1.2L turbo-petrol if you mainly drive in the city and want a peppy, refined motor at a lower price. Pick the diesel if you cover long highway distances regularly and prioritise fuel economy, as it returns noticeably higher mileage.
What is the mileage of the Tata Nexon?
The turbo-petrol returns roughly 17 kmpl and the diesel around 23 kmpl in official figures. Real-world city economy is usually a few kmpl lower depending on traffic, AC use and driving style.
Does the Nexon come with an automatic gearbox?
Yes. Depending on engine, you can get a 6-speed AMT or a smoother 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, alongside the standard 6-speed manual. The dual-clutch unit feels the most car-like in normal driving.
How much boot space does the Nexon have?
The Nexon offers around 382 litres of boot space, which is generous for a sub-4-metre SUV and easily swallows a family's weekend luggage or a big grocery run.
Is the Nexon good value for money?
For the safety rating, features and cabin quality on offer, the Nexon is strong value, especially in the mid-spec turbo-petrol trims. Top variants get pricey, so cross-shop them against well-equipped rivals before deciding.
