Tata Nexon EV review

The Tata Nexon EV is the electric version of India's popular compact SUV, and the car that did the most to make EV ownership feel normal here. The current facelifted model brings sharper styling, a cleaner cabin and two battery options, so buyers can pick between a value-focused short-range pack or a longer-legged one. It pairs an easy, silent drive with the practicality of a regular Nexon, and remains the benchmark most affordable electric SUVs are measured against.

On the move the Nexon EV is exactly what most first-time EV buyers want: smooth, quiet and effortless in city traffic. There's a strong shove of torque the moment you press the accelerator, which makes nipping through gaps genuinely fun, and the absence of gears or engine noise takes the stress out of stop-go commuting. The City and Sport drive modes let you balance range against urgency, and the regenerative braking is now adjustable through steering paddles, so you can dial in how much the car slows when you lift off.

The cabin is the biggest leap over the older car. The dashboard is dominated by a 12.3-inch touchscreen and a fully digital driver's display, and the build feels more upmarket than the price suggests. Space is good for four adults, the boot is usable for a family weekend, and features like ventilated front seats, a wireless charger, a 360-degree camera and an air purifier are available higher up the range. The flat floor and rear AC vents make the back seat comfortable, though three abreast is still a squeeze.

Range is where expectations need managing. The 40.5 kWh Long Range version claims 465 km on the test cycle, which in real Indian conditions with AC on translates to roughly 300-350 km, while the smaller 30 kWh pack is better suited to predictable city use. Fast charging from 10 to 80 percent takes around 40 minutes on a 50 kW DC charger, and a home wallbox will comfortably top it up overnight. As always with EVs, your experience depends heavily on whether you can charge at home or work.

There are rough edges. The ride can feel firm and a little fidgety over broken roads, the touchscreen handles too many functions including basic ones, and some interior plastics don't match the slick screens. It's also not cheap once you climb into the well-equipped variants. But none of these are dealbreakers for the core audience, and Tata's wide service network and growing charging tie-ups make the ownership story more reassuring than most rivals can offer.

Our verdict — If you can charge at home and your driving is mostly urban with the occasional highway run, the Nexon EV is one of the easiest electric cars to live with in India. Buy the Long Range pack if you can stretch the budget, and you get a practical, well-equipped SUV that makes a strong case against petrol rivals.

Cheaper to run than I expected

I charge at home overnight and my monthly running cost has dropped to almost nothing compared to my old petrol car. City driving is a breeze and the instant torque is addictive. Just plan your charging on long trips and you'll be fine.

Great cabin, slightly stiff ride

The big screen and ventilated seats make it feel premium and my family loves the quietness. The only thing I'd change is the ride, which gets bouncy over bad roads. Overall very happy with the purchase.

Arjun T.Owned for 1 year

Good car, charging needs planning

Real range with AC settles around 300 km on the long range pack, which is honest enough for my use. Public fast chargers can be hit or miss outside big cities. If you have home charging, go for it without hesitation.

Alternatives to the Tata Nexon EV

Tata Nexon EV — frequently asked questions

What is the real-world range of the Nexon EV?

The Long Range 40.5 kWh pack claims 465 km on the test cycle, which works out to roughly 300-350 km in real driving with the AC on. The smaller 30 kWh pack delivers around 200-250 km in real use and suits city commuting.

How long does it take to charge?

On a 50 kW DC fast charger it goes from 10 to 80 percent in about 40 minutes. A 7.2 kW home wallbox fully charges it overnight, while the standard 3.3 kW charger takes longer and is best left plugged in overnight.

Should I buy the 30 kWh or 40.5 kWh pack?

Choose the 30 kWh pack if your driving is mostly predictable city commuting and you want to save money. Pick the 40.5 kWh Long Range if you take occasional highway trips or want a bigger buffer for range anxiety.

Is the Nexon EV safe?

The Nexon platform has a strong safety reputation, and the EV comes with six airbags on most variants, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, ISOFIX mounts and a 360-degree camera on higher trims.

What is the battery warranty?

Tata offers a long battery and motor warranty, typically 8 years or 1,60,000 km, which gives reassurance about the most expensive component. Always confirm the exact terms with your dealer at the time of purchase.

Can I charge it at home easily?

Yes, if you have a dedicated parking spot with a power point. Tata provides a home charger with the car, and installing a 7.2 kW wallbox makes overnight charging quick and convenient for daily use.
