MG ZS EV
Affordable electric SUV, genuinely usable range
MG ZS EV review
The MG ZS EV is one of India's most accessible electric SUVs, built around a 50.3 kWh battery that delivers a realistic 350-odd kilometres in everyday city use. It pairs brisk single-motor performance with a comfortable, feature-rich cabin and a usable boot. Positioned between mass-market and premium, it asks buyers to commit to charging infrastructure but rewards them with low running costs and effortless, quiet progress through congested Indian traffic.
On the move, the ZS EV feels quicker than its modest looks suggest. The 174 bhp motor pulls cleanly from a standstill, and the instant torque makes overtaking and closing gaps in traffic genuinely easy. There are selectable drive modes and three regeneration levels, so you can tune how aggressively the car slows when you lift off. The ride is on the firmer side over broken roads, but it stays composed at highway speeds and the low-set battery keeps body roll in check through corners.
Inside, the cabin is well-equipped for the price. You get a large touchscreen, a digital driver's display, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats on higher trims, and MG's connected-car tech with remote functions through a phone app. Material quality is decent rather than plush, and the layout is clean and easy to live with. Space is good for four adults, the boot is family-friendly, and refinement is excellent thanks to the near-silent powertrain.
Range is the honest talking point. MG's MIDC claim of around 461 km translates to roughly 320-370 km in mixed real-world driving, dropping further with air-conditioning and highway speeds. That is enough for city commuting and weekend runs, but long inter-city trips need planning around DC fast chargers, which are still patchy outside major metros. A 50 kW fast charger takes the battery from 0-80 percent in under an hour; home AC charging is an overnight affair.
The ownership case rests on running costs. Charging at home works out to a fraction of petrol or diesel per kilometre, and an EV has far fewer moving parts to service. The trade-off is the higher upfront price and the dependence on charging access. For buyers who can charge at home or work, the maths is compelling; for those without, the convenience drops sharply.

Owner reviews
City commuting bliss
I charge overnight at home and my monthly running cost has dropped to almost nothing compared to my old diesel. It's smooth, silent and quick off the line. I just plan my longer trips around fast chargers.
Great car, mind the range
The cabin and features feel premium and the family loves the sunroof. My only gripe is the real range is closer to 330 km than the claim, and with AC on highways it falls more. Fine for the city though.
Low maintenance winner
Service visits are cheap and infrequent since there's so little to go wrong. Performance is genuinely fun in traffic. The ride is a bit firm on bad roads, but overall I'm very happy with the ownership cost.

MG ZS EV — frequently asked questions
What is the real-world range of the MG ZS EV?
Expect roughly 320-370 km in mixed driving against the claimed 461 km. Highway speeds and heavy air-conditioning use will reduce this further.
How long does it take to charge?
A 50 kW DC fast charger takes the battery from 0-80 percent in under an hour. A home AC wall box charges fully overnight, while a regular socket is much slower.
Does it get a sunroof?
Yes, higher variants come with a panoramic sunroof along with ventilated front seats and a larger touchscreen.
How many people can it seat?
It is a five-seater SUV with comfortable space for four adults and a usable boot for family luggage.
What warranty does the battery get?
MG typically offers a long battery warranty of around 8 years or 1,50,000 km, which is reassuring for resale and long-term ownership.
Is it worth buying without home charging?
It works best if you can charge at home or work. Relying only on public chargers is workable in big cities but less convenient elsewhere.
