Jeep Compass
The benchmark premium compact SUV for India
Jeep Compass review
The Jeep Compass sits at the upper end of India's compact SUV space, leaning on genuine off-road pedigree rather than spec-sheet bragging. Built locally at Ranjangaon, it pairs a punchy 2.0-litre diesel with a cabin that feels a class above most rivals. It is not the cheapest or roomiest in its bracket, but few SUVs at this price feel as planted on a highway or as capable when the tarmac runs out beneath them.
On the road, the Compass is the SUV that reminds you why driving dynamics matter. The 2.0-litre diesel delivers a meaty 168 bhp and 350 Nm, and there is real shove from low revs whether you choose the six-speed manual or the smooth nine-speed torque-converter automatic. The steering has weight and accuracy that most competitors lack, and the suspension soaks up broken roads while staying composed through fast corners. The available four-wheel-drive system, complete with selectable terrain modes, gives it genuine ability that few buyers will fully exploit but most will appreciate.
Inside, the Compass feels built to last. Soft-touch surfaces, a clean dashboard layout and the 10.1-inch Uconnect touchscreen give it a premium, European-feeling ambience. Equipment is generous on higher trims, with ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging and a digital instrument cluster. Fit and finish is among the best in the segment, and the front seats offer excellent long-distance support.
It is not without compromises. Rear-seat space is merely adequate rather than generous, and taller passengers may find knee room tight behind a taller driver. The boot is usable but not class-leading, and running costs sit on the higher side thanks to the diesel-only line-up and premium servicing. Some buyers also expect more cubbyholes and family-friendly practicality at this money.
For the right buyer, though, the trade-offs make sense. The Compass rewards anyone who values how an SUV drives, feels and ages over outright cabin space or the lowest price. It is a mature, well-rounded package that has earned a loyal following, and the locally built quality means it holds up to Indian conditions better than its import-flavoured character might suggest.

Owner reviews
A highway companion that never tires
I clock close to 2,000 km a month and the Compass diesel just eats up the distance. The seats are supportive and the engine has effortless overtaking power. Mileage on the highway is decent, though city economy could be better.
Premium feel, tight rear seat
The cabin genuinely feels more expensive than the price suggests and the build quality is reassuring. My only gripe is that my parents find the rear a little snug on longer trips. Otherwise it has been trouble-free.
Great to drive, pricey to run
Nothing in this segment drives as well, and the 4x4 has pulled me out of some rough patches near my farm. Service costs are on the higher side and a few parts took time to arrive, so factor that into your budget.

Jeep Compass — frequently asked questions
Is the Jeep Compass available with a petrol engine in India?
No. The current Compass is offered only with a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine. The petrol option that was sold earlier has been discontinued in the Indian line-up.
Does the Compass come with four-wheel drive?
Yes, but only on select top trims. Most variants are front-wheel drive, while the higher Model S 4x4 variant adds an all-wheel-drive system with selectable terrain modes.
How is the real-world fuel economy?
Expect roughly 13-14 kmpl in city driving and 16-18 kmpl on the highway, depending on whether you choose the manual or automatic and how you drive.
Is the Compass good for a family of five?
It comfortably seats four adults and five at a push. Rear knee room is adequate rather than spacious, so very tall passengers may find longer journeys a little tight.
How safe is the Jeep Compass?
It is well equipped, with multiple airbags, electronic stability control, ABS with EBD and ISOFIX mounts. The Compass has historically performed strongly in crash testing, making safety one of its highlights.
Is the automatic worth the extra cost?
If you drive a lot in traffic, the nine-speed automatic is smooth and well matched to the diesel engine. Enthusiasts who enjoy control may still prefer the slick six-speed manual.
