Kia K5
Sleek styling and turbo power, affordable midsize
Kia K5 review
The Kia K5 replaced the long-running Optima with a bolder, more coupe-like shape and a sharper road manner. It is a midsize sedan that leans into style without abandoning the practical strengths buyers expect in this class: a roomy cabin, a generous trunk, and a long warranty. With turbocharged power standard, available all-wheel drive, and a feature list that undercuts pricier rivals, the K5 makes a confident value argument against the segment's established players.
On the road, the K5 feels more eager than its mainstream price suggests. The standard 1.6-liter turbo four delivers a healthy 180 horsepower routed through an eight-speed automatic, and it pulls cleanly from low revs for confident highway merging and passing. The GT trim steps up to a 2.5-liter turbo with 290 horsepower and a quicker dual-clutch gearbox, turning the K5 into a genuinely quick sedan. Ride quality is composed and the steering is accurate, though enthusiasts may find the standard models tuned more for comfort than outright sharpness.
Inside, the cabin is one of the K5's strongest cards. Materials feel a cut above the price point on higher trims, the dashboard layout is clean, and the available dual 10.25-inch screens give the interior a modern, upscale look. Front-seat space is generous and the trunk is among the largest in the class. Rear headroom is the one compromise: the sloping roofline trims a little space for taller passengers, a trade-off for the car's dramatic profile.
Value is where the K5 truly separates itself. Standard active-safety equipment, available all-wheel drive at a reasonable premium, and Kia's lengthy powertrain warranty add up to a compelling ownership case. Fuel economy from the base turbo is competitive at around 32 mpg combined, though it isn't class-leading and there's no hybrid option, which some shoppers cross-shopping a Camry or Accord will notice.
The K5 isn't perfect. The lack of a hybrid or plug-in variant limits its appeal for efficiency-focused buyers, the GT's dual-clutch transmission can feel hesitant at low speeds, and rear visibility suffers from the styling. But for most buyers these are minor footnotes against a sedan that looks expensive, drives well, and costs less than the competition.

Looks like it costs twice as much
People constantly ask me what I paid because the K5 looks so sharp. The turbo has plenty of punch for daily driving and the trunk swallows everything I throw at it. My only gripe is that my tall teenager complains about rear headroom on longer trips.
Great value, wish it had a hybrid
I cross-shopped the Camry and Accord and the K5 just gave me more for the money, especially the tech. Real-world economy is fine but not amazing at around 30 mpg. I'd have paid extra for a hybrid version if Kia offered one.
The GT is seriously quick
I went for the GT and 290 horsepower in a sedan this comfortable is a blast. The dual-clutch can be a little jerky parking, but once you're moving it's fantastic. The warranty gives me real peace of mind too.

Kia K5 — frequently asked questions
Does the Kia K5 come with all-wheel drive?
Yes. All-wheel drive is available as an option on several trims with the 1.6-liter turbo engine, which is unusual at this price in the midsize class. The performance GT trim remains front-wheel drive only.
Is there a hybrid version of the K5?
No. The K5 is offered only with gasoline turbocharged engines in the US. Buyers wanting a hybrid midsize sedan would need to look at rivals like the Toyota Camry Hybrid or Honda Accord Hybrid.
How powerful is the Kia K5?
Most trims use a 1.6-liter turbo making 180 horsepower. The top GT trim uses a 2.5-liter turbo producing 290 horsepower, making it one of the quicker mainstream sedans you can buy.
What kind of fuel economy can I expect?
The base 1.6-liter turbo returns roughly 32 mpg combined, with front-wheel-drive models being the most efficient. All-wheel drive and the GT's larger engine lower those figures somewhat.
How big is the trunk?
The K5 offers about 16 cubic feet of trunk space, among the largest in the midsize segment, easily handling luggage, groceries, or sports gear for a family.
Is the Kia K5 reliable and well covered?
Kia backs the K5 with a 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, one of the longest in the industry, which supports strong ownership confidence.
