Ford F-150 review

The Ford F-150 is the truck that defines the full-size pickup segment in America, and the current 14th generation refines a winning formula rather than reinventing it. Buyers get a broad lineup spanning frugal work trucks to luxury-grade crew cabs, a strong roster of gas, EcoBoost, and hybrid powertrains, plus genuinely useful tricks like the available onboard generator. It hauls, tows, and commutes with equal ease, which is exactly why it stays atop the sales charts.

Ford builds the F-150 in so many configurations that no two buyers need end up with the same truck. You can spec a stripped-down XL regular cab for fleet duty or pile on the leather, massaging seats, and 12-inch screens of a Limited that costs as much as a luxury SUV. Cab and bed combinations, six powertrains, and a deep options list mean the truck flexes to fit landscapers, families, and weekend adventurers alike. That breadth is the F-150's single greatest strength.

On the road the trucks feel composed for something this large. The high-volume 2.7L and 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engines deliver torque early and tow confidently, while the naturally aspirated 5.0L V8 remains for traditionalists who want the sound and linear pull. The PowerBoost full hybrid is the smart pick for many: it adds low-end shove, improves fuel economy, and powers the Pro Power Onboard generator that can run tools or even back up a house during an outage. The 10-speed automatic shifts smoothly most of the time, occasionally hunting under light throttle.

Inside, recent updates brought a cleaner dashboard, a large central touchscreen running Ford's responsive SYNC 4 software, and clever practicality touches like the fold-flat shifter and interior work surface. Material quality climbs sharply as you move up the trim ladder; lower trims still use a lot of hard plastic. Ride quality is good for a body-on-frame truck, though an unladen rear end can feel choppy on rough pavement, and the wide body takes practice to place in tight parking lots.

The F-150 isn't flawless. Real-world fuel economy from the gas engines is merely okay, options inflate the price quickly, and rivals like the Ram 1500 arguably ride more plushly. But the combination of class-leading tow ratings, a vast dealer and service network, strong resale value, and that endless configurability is hard to beat. For most American truck buyers, it remains the sensible default for good reason.

Our verdict — The Ford F-150 is the safe, smart choice in the full-size truck class: hugely capable, endlessly configurable, and backed by unmatched dealer support and resale. Choose the PowerBoost hybrid if you want the best blend of efficiency and utility, but watch the options list, because a loaded F-150 gets expensive fast.

Does everything I ask of it

I tow a 7,000-lb trailer most weekends and the EcoBoost never breaks a sweat. The cabin is comfortable enough for long drives and the bed has hauled everything from mulch to a dirt bike. Fuel economy is just average when I'm towing, but that's expected.

The hybrid generator sold me

We lost power for two days last winter and Pro Power Onboard kept our fridge and space heaters running. Day to day the PowerBoost gets noticeably better mileage than my old V8. Honestly the best vehicle purchase I've made.

Great truck, pricey extras

Love the capability and the SYNC screen is excellent. My only gripe is how fast the price climbs once you start adding packages, and the base interior plastics feel cheap. Still, it's been reliable and holds its value well.

Alternatives to the Ford F-150

Ford F-150 — frequently asked questions

How much can the Ford F-150 tow?

When properly equipped, the F-150 can tow up to roughly 13,500 lbs, though most trims and configurations fall well below that. Towing capacity depends heavily on engine, cab, axle ratio, and the tow package, so check the door-jamb sticker for your specific truck.

Which F-150 engine is the best choice?

For most buyers the 2.7L EcoBoost balances efficiency and value, while the 3.5L EcoBoost is the towing workhorse. The PowerBoost full hybrid is the smartest all-rounder thanks to strong torque, better mileage, and the onboard generator.

Is the F-150 available as a hybrid or electric?

Yes. The F-150 offers a PowerBoost gas-electric hybrid across several trims. Ford also sells the all-electric F-150 Lightning as a separate model with its own lineup and pricing.

What is Pro Power Onboard?

Pro Power Onboard is an available onboard generator system that provides power outlets in the bed and cab. On the hybrid it can supply up to 7.2 kW, enough to run power tools, a campsite, or even back up essential home appliances during an outage.

How is the F-150's fuel economy?

The gas V6 and V8 engines return roughly 18-22 MPG combined depending on configuration, which is average for the class. The PowerBoost hybrid is the efficiency leader, especially in city driving and stop-start use.

Does the F-150 hold its value well?

Yes. Full-size trucks generally enjoy strong resale, and the F-150's popularity, parts availability, and broad demand help it retain value better than many vehicles, particularly in popular trims and configurations.
