Ram 1500
Luxury, muscle, and a smarter pickup cabin
Ram 1500 review
The Ram 1500 is the truck that pulled the full-size segment toward comfort. While rivals leaned on raw capability, Ram built a half-ton pickup with a quiet, well-trimmed cabin, an available air suspension, and one of the best ride qualities in the class. For 2025 it dropped the old V8s in favor of a turbocharged inline-six lineup, headlined by the high-output Hurricane engine. It remains a serious worker that happens to feel like a living room inside.
Ram earned its reputation by rethinking what a work truck should feel like, and the 1500 still leads with refinement. The optional rear coil-spring and air suspension setups soak up broken pavement far better than the leaf-spring rigs from Ford and Chevrolet, and the cabin stays impressively hushed at highway speed. Step up to a Limited or Longhorn trim and the interior genuinely rivals luxury SUVs, with real wood, leather, and a towering 14.4-inch touchscreen that anchors the dashboard.
The big change this generation is under the hood. Ram retired the Hemi V8 and now relies on its 3.0-liter twin-turbo "Hurricane" inline-six, offered in standard 420-hp form and a high-output 540-hp version. Both pull strongly and tow with authority, and the eight-speed automatic shifts smoothly. Buyers nostalgic for V8 rumble will notice the difference in character, even if the six is quicker and more efficient on paper.
Capability stays competitive. Properly equipped, a Ram 1500 tows up to roughly 11,500 pounds and hauls a useful payload, and the available RamBox cargo system and clever in-bed and in-cabin storage remain class favorites. The Rebel and new RHO off-road trims add real hardware for trail use. Fuel economy is middling for a big gas truck, hovering around 20 mpg combined, and that's worth weighing against more efficient rivals.
The trade-offs are familiar. Loaded trims climb well past $80,000, the giant touchscreen swallows some physical controls buyers may miss, and reliability ratings have historically trailed the Japanese-badged trucks. Ram has also dropped a pure EV variant from near-term plans, so the lineup is gas and mild-hybrid for now. Still, for ride comfort and interior quality, few half-tons match it.

Rides like a luxury SUV
I tow a 7,000-pound trailer most weekends and this truck handles it without drama. The air suspension makes long highway drives genuinely comfortable. My only gripe is the fuel bill on a road trip.
Great cabin, missing my V8
The Laramie interior is nicer than my old SUV and the big screen is easy to use. The new six is plenty quick, but I do miss the sound and feel of the old Hemi. Worth it overall.
Love it but a few niggles
Comfort and storage are unbeatable for my work crew. I've had a couple of small electrical glitches that needed a dealer visit, which is why it's not five stars. Still buy it again.

Ram 1500 — frequently asked questions
How much can a Ram 1500 tow?
Properly equipped, a Ram 1500 tows up to about 11,500 pounds, though the exact figure depends on engine, cab, and axle ratio. Most mainstream configurations land in the 8,000 to 11,000-pound range.
Does the Ram 1500 still offer a V8?
For the current lineup Ram has moved to turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engines and retired the Hemi V8 from most builds. The standard six makes 420 hp and a high-output version makes 540 hp.
What kind of fuel economy should I expect?
Expect roughly 18 to 22 mpg combined depending on engine, drivetrain, and trim. Four-wheel-drive and the high-output engine sit at the lower end, while rear-drive setups do a bit better.
Is the Ram 1500 reliable?
It performs well in many areas, but Ram's reliability ratings have historically trailed Toyota and, in some years, GM. Buying with a solid warranty and keeping up with service helps.
What is the RamBox?
RamBox is an optional system of lockable, drainable storage bins built into the bed rails. It's handy for tools, gear, and drinks, though it slightly reduces usable bed width.
Which trim offers the best value?
The Big Horn and Laramie trims hit the sweet spot, adding comfort and tech features without the steep price jump of the Longhorn and Limited luxury models.
