Mercedes-Benz GLE
Mercedes' luxury SUV all-rounder, now sharper
Mercedes-Benz GLE review
The Mercedes-Benz GLE sits in that sweet spot of the brand's SUV range — big enough to feel imposing, refined enough to use every day. In India it arrives with mild-hybrid petrol and diesel four-cylinders, air suspension on top trims, and a cabin that genuinely justifies the badge. It rivals the BMW X5 and Audi Q7 head-on, and for many buyers it's the default choice. Locally assembled, it undercuts full-import alternatives while keeping the long-distance comfort intact.
The current GLE leans into comfort rather than outright sportiness, and that suits Indian roads well. The optional Airmatic air suspension soaks up broken tarmac and speed breakers with a calm that the steel-sprung variants can't quite match, and the long wheelbase keeps the cabin settled at highway speeds. Refinement is a strong point — the four-cylinder engines are well isolated, and only under hard acceleration do you hear them work.
Both powertrains are 2.0-litre turbo units with a 48V mild-hybrid assist. The petrol (GLE 450) is the smoother, quieter pick for city and highway cruising, while the diesel (GLE 300d/450d) returns better economy and pulls harder in the mid-range, making it the sensible long-distance choice. The nine-speed automatic is unobtrusive most of the time, though it can hesitate slightly when you ask for a sudden downshift. Power delivery is more than adequate rather than thrilling — this is a relaxed mile-eater, not a back-road weapon.
Inside, the GLE feels every bit a Mercedes. The twin-screen MBUX setup is crisp and feature-rich, the front seats are excellent, and material quality is consistently high. Rear-seat space is generous for two adults, though the swooping roofline eats a little headroom for taller passengers. The boot is large and usefully shaped. Where the GLE asks for caution is the options list — many desirable features sit on higher trims or packages, and ticking boxes inflates the price quickly. After-sales costs and service intervals are also worth budgeting for.
Dynamically, the GLE is competent rather than engaging. Body control is good for a vehicle this size, but the steering is light and the focus is clearly on isolation. If you want the most involving drive in this class, the BMW X5 still leads; if you prioritise ride comfort and cabin serenity, the GLE makes a very strong case.

Brilliant highway companion
I do Mumbai-Pune almost every weekend and the GLE 450d just glides. The diesel torque makes overtaking effortless and the cabin is whisper quiet. Mileage on the highway is genuinely respectable for such a big SUV.
Plush but options add up
The comfort and build quality are unmatched in my experience. My only gripe is that I had to pay extra for features I expected as standard at this price. Service visits are also not cheap, so factor that in.
Family loves it
Bought the petrol for daily city use and it's incredibly smooth and refined. The rear seat is comfortable for my parents and the boot swallows all our luggage. Wish the touchscreen had a few less menus to dig through.

Mercedes-Benz GLE — frequently asked questions
Should I buy the petrol or diesel GLE?
Choose the diesel (300d/450d) if you cover high mileage or do regular highway runs — it's more frugal and pulls harder in the mid-range. The petrol (450) is smoother and quieter for mostly city use.
Is the GLE locally assembled in India?
Yes, the GLE is assembled (CKD) at Mercedes-Benz's Chakan plant near Pune, which helps keep its pricing competitive against fully imported rivals.
How many people can the GLE seat?
The India-spec GLE is offered as a 5-seater. A third row is available in some global markets but the standard local configuration prioritises rear-seat space and boot capacity.
Does the GLE get air suspension?
Airmatic air suspension is available on higher trims and is a worthwhile upgrade for ride comfort, particularly on poor roads. The base variants use a conventional steel-spring setup.
What is the real-world fuel economy?
Expect roughly 9-11 kmpl in the city and 13-15 kmpl on the highway for the diesel; the petrol is a couple of kmpl lower. Real figures depend heavily on driving style and traffic.
How does the GLE compare to the BMW X5?
The GLE is the more comfort-focused, serene choice, while the X5 is sharper and more engaging to drive. Both are excellent — pick based on whether you value plush ride or driver involvement.
