Audi A4 review

The Audi A4 is the German brand's entry into the executive sedan space in India, sitting below the A6 and rivalling the usual Bavarian and Stuttgart suspects. It pairs a single 2.0-litre turbo-petrol with a slick seven-speed gearbox, front-wheel drive and Audi's typically restrained cabin. It is not the flashiest choice in its class, but it remains one of the most rounded: comfortable, well-built and quietly quick when you ask it to be.

On the road the A4 leans towards refinement rather than drama. The 2.0 TFSI engine, helped by a 12-volt mild-hybrid system, is smooth and responsive once past a slight initial hesitation, and the dual-clutch gearbox shifts cleanly in everyday driving. There is enough performance for confident overtakes, and the sedan settles into a relaxed, quiet cruise on the highway. Enthusiasts may miss the quattro all-wheel drive offered in some past versions, as India now gets the front-wheel-drive layout only.

Ride quality is a strong suit. The suspension absorbs broken city roads and expansion joints with composure, and the cabin stays hushed at speed. The trade-off is steering that feels accurate but a little light and short on feedback, so the A4 is better described as a comfortable companion than a sharp tool. Body control on twisty roads is tidy, though, and it never feels unwieldy.

Inside, the A4 shows its age in one respect: the dashboard design is cleaner and more conventional than the screen-heavy layouts of newer rivals. That is no bad thing day to day, with crisp physical climate controls, the excellent Virtual Cockpit digital dial display and a logical infotainment system. Material quality is first-rate, front seats are supportive, and fit and finish are typically Audi-solid. The cabin is best for four; the rear seat is comfortable but knee room is merely adequate for the segment, and the transmission tunnel eats into middle-seat space.

Practicality is reasonable. The 460-litre boot is a useful shape, equipment levels are generous on the higher trim, and running an A4 is relatively painless by luxury standards. The main caveats are the petrol-only line-up, the lack of a diesel or larger boot some buyers still want, and a features list that, while complete, no longer feels cutting-edge against the latest competition.

Our verdict — The A4 is the sensible, grown-up pick in the entry-luxury sedan class: beautifully built, comfortable and easy to live with, even if it no longer leads on outright tech or excitement. If you value ride quality and understatement over the flashiest screens, it deserves a test drive alongside the 3 Series and C-Class.

Effortless daily driver

I use it mostly for city commutes and weekend highway runs, and it does both brilliantly. The ride is plush over bad roads and it's genuinely relaxing to drive. I just wish the rear seat had a bit more knee room for my family.

Understated and classy

Coming from a Honda, the build quality and cabin feel like a big step up. It doesn't shout for attention, which is exactly what I wanted. Mileage in the city hovers around 10-11 kmpl, so budget for that.

Great car, misses AWD

The engine is smooth and quick, and the gearbox is mostly seamless. My only real gripe is that I'd have loved quattro for our monsoon roads. Service costs are on the higher side but expected for the badge.

Alternatives to the Audi A4

Audi A4 — frequently asked questions

Is the Audi A4 available in diesel?

No. The current India line-up is petrol-only, using a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with a mild-hybrid system. There is no diesel or CNG option.

Does the A4 get all-wheel drive?

Not in the current India spec. It is sold with front-wheel drive only; the quattro all-wheel-drive system is not offered on this generation here.

What kind of mileage can I expect?

Audi quotes around 17 kmpl, but in real-world city driving you should expect roughly 10-12 kmpl, improving to the mid-teens on the highway.

How many people can it seat comfortably?

It is a five-seater, but it is most comfortable for four adults. The rear middle seat is best kept for short trips due to the transmission tunnel.

Is the A4 expensive to maintain?

Running costs are typical for a luxury sedan, higher than a mainstream car. Audi offers service and extended-warranty packages that help make costs more predictable.

How big is the boot?

The boot holds about 460 litres, a usefully shaped space that easily handles airport runs and family luggage for two.
