Petrol vs diesel vs electric: which one fits you?

There is no universally best fuel — only the one that matches your driving distance, budget and patience for charging.

Petrol vs diesel vs electric: which one fits you?

The right fuel type depends almost entirely on how far you drive. If your monthly running is low to moderate and mostly in the city, a petrol car is usually the most sensible choice: the lowest purchase price, quiet refinement and cheap maintenance offset its slightly higher per-kilometre cost.

Diesel earns its premium only at high mileage. Diesel engines cost more upfront and to service, but their superior fuel efficiency and strong low-end torque pay off if you regularly cover long highway distances. As a rough rule, the more highway kilometres you do each year, the stronger the diesel case becomes.

Electric flips the maths. The purchase price is higher, but running costs are dramatically lower and there is almost nothing to service. The deciding factor is charging: an EV is excellent if you can charge at home or work and your typical day fits comfortably inside the range. If you depend on public charging or do frequent unplanned long trips, the convenience gap can frustrate.

Hybrids sit in between — they cut city fuel use without asking you to plug in, making them a low-friction stepping stone for buyers who want efficiency without changing their habits.
