Tata Altroz review

The Tata Altroz is a premium hatchback that built its reputation on one thing above all: safety. With a 5-star Global NCAP crash rating, a solid build and a wide engine line-up spanning petrol, diesel and CNG, it targets buyers who want substance over flash. The 2024 facelift sharpened the styling, modernised the cabin and added an automatic option, keeping it a credible alternative to more popular rivals in the busy ₹7-11 lakh hatchback space.

On the road, the Altroz feels reassuringly planted. Its stiff body and well-judged suspension give it a sense of maturity that few rivals match, soaking up broken tarmac and expansion joints with quiet confidence. The steering is light at city speeds yet firms up adequately on the highway, and high-speed stability is genuinely impressive for the segment. The trade-off is a ride that can feel firm over sharper potholes, and the kerb weight blunts outright agility.

Powertrains are the area where the Altroz asks for a little patience. The 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol is smooth and adequate for the city but feels strained when fully loaded or climbing inclines. The turbo-petrol adds welcome punch, while the 1.5-litre diesel remains the long-distance champion with its strong mid-range and frugal nature. The new DCA automatic eases stop-go commuting, though it is best driven smoothly rather than hurried.

Inside, the cabin is a pleasant place to spend time. The 2024 update brought a larger touchscreen, a cleaner dashboard, automatic climate control and a digital instrument cluster on higher trims. Material quality is a step above the budget norm, and rear-seat space is generous for two adults, though the dark cabin and a slightly high window line can feel enclosing. Boot space is usable for weekend trips.

Where the Altroz truly separates itself is safety and structural integrity. Dual airbags are standard, with six available higher up the range, and the 5-star crash protection is a genuine peace-of-mind feature for families. It is not the most feature-loaded or the most fun hatchback you can buy, but it may be the most sensible.

Our verdict — If safety, build quality and highway composure top your list, the Altroz is the most sensible premium hatchback you can buy today. It asks you to live with modest base-engine performance and a slightly firm ride, but rewards you with maturity rivals can't match. Pick the turbo-petrol or diesel for the best balance.

Built like a tank

Bought it mainly for the safety rating and I haven't regretted it. On highway drives the car stays glued to the road even at triple-digit speeds. The base petrol does feel slow when the car is full, but for daily city use it's perfectly fine.

Great cabin, firm ride

The interior feels premium for the price and the rear seat is comfy for my parents. My only complaint is the ride gets a bit bouncy over bad patches and the dark cabin makes it feel smaller. Mileage from the petrol has been around 16-17 in the city.

Diesel is the one to get

I do a lot of intercity running and the diesel returns 21-22 kmpl on the highway easily. Strong pull in the mid-range and very relaxed cruising. Service costs are reasonable and nothing major has gone wrong so far.

Alternatives to the Tata Altroz

Tata Altroz — frequently asked questions

Is the Tata Altroz safe?

Yes. The Altroz holds a 5-star Global NCAP crash rating and comes with dual front airbags as standard, with six airbags, ABS with EBD and ISOFIX child-seat mounts available on higher trims.

Which engine should I choose?

For city use the 1.2 petrol is adequate. If you drive long distances regularly, the diesel offers the best economy and mid-range pull, while the turbo-petrol suits buyers who want extra performance.

Does the Altroz get an automatic gearbox?

Yes, the petrol is offered with a DCA dual-clutch automatic. The diesel and CNG variants remain manual-only at present.

What mileage does the Altroz deliver?

The petrol returns roughly 19 kmpl, the diesel is the most efficient at over 23 kmpl claimed, and the CNG is the cheapest to run on a per-kilometre basis.

How practical is the Altroz for a family?

It seats five, has a comfortable rear bench for two adults and a usable boot. Combined with its safety credentials, it makes a sensible family hatchback.

How does it compare to the Baleno and i20?

The Baleno and i20 feel peppier and more feature-rich, but the Altroz counters with stronger build quality, a 5-star safety rating and a wider fuel choice including diesel and CNG.
