Maruti Suzuki Ertiga
India's value 7-seater family MUV
Maruti Suzuki Ertiga review
The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga remains the default choice for Indian families needing genuine seven-seat practicality without stepping up to an expensive SUV. Built on a light, efficient platform, it pairs a frugal 1.5-litre petrol engine with low running costs and Maruti's vast service network. It isn't flashy or rugged, but it nails the brief: a roomy, sensible, easy-to-own people-mover that the whole family can live with every single day.
On the road, the Ertiga is tuned for comfort and economy rather than excitement. The 1.5-litre petrol delivers smooth, adequate performance for city commutes and highway cruising, though a full load of seven plus luggage does blunt its enthusiasm, especially on inclines. The 6-speed torque converter automatic is unhurried but relaxed, while the manual is light and easy in traffic. Mild-hybrid tech and a frugal nature mean real-world fuel economy is genuinely impressive for a vehicle this size.
Space is where the Ertiga earns its keep. The first two rows are airy and comfortable, and unlike many compact MUVs the third row is usable by adults for shorter journeys, not just children. Even with all three rows up there's enough boot space for a few soft bags, and folding the rearmost seats opens up a large, flat load bay. The light-coloured cabin feels roomy, though some plastics feel built strictly to a price.
Dynamically, the Ertiga prioritises ride comfort and is happy soaking up broken city roads at moderate speeds. Push harder and there's noticeable body roll, and the steering offers little feedback, so this is no enthusiast's machine. Features are reasonable for the segment, with a touchscreen, connected-car tech, cruise control and automatic climate control on higher trims, but you won't find a sunroof or a 360-degree camera here.
Safety is adequate rather than class-leading: six airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP and ISOFIX are available, but the Ertiga has not been put through Bharat NCAP, and rivals now offer more on the safety-feature front. For most buyers, though, the combination of unbeatable running costs, dependable mechanicals and strong resale value will outweigh those gaps.

Owner reviews
Perfect for a joint family
We are a family of six and the Ertiga handles us and the weekend luggage with ease. Mileage in the city is around 16-17 kmpl and on highways it touches 20. Service costs have been minimal so far.
Comfortable but wish it had a sunroof
The cabin is roomy and the automatic is very relaxing in Bangalore traffic. My only complaint is the missing sunroof and the plasticky feel of some parts. Overall a sensible buy for the money.
CNG version saves a fortune
I run the CNG variant for my daily commute and the running cost is incredibly low. Boot space shrinks with the cylinder, but for city use it is unbeatable. Reliable and trouble-free so far.
Alternatives to the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga
Maruti Suzuki Ertiga — frequently asked questions
Is the Ertiga a true 7-seater for adults?
Yes, all three rows can seat adults, though the third row is best for shorter trips. It is far more usable than most compact MUVs in this price band.
What is the real-world mileage of the Ertiga?
Expect roughly 15-17 kmpl in the city and up to 20 kmpl on highways with the petrol. The CNG variant returns around 26 km/kg, making it very economical.
Does the Ertiga come with an automatic gearbox?
Yes, higher petrol trims offer a 6-speed torque converter automatic. It is smooth and relaxed, ideal for city driving, though tuned more for comfort than quick acceleration.
Is a diesel engine available?
No. Maruti has discontinued diesel from its range, so the Ertiga is offered only with petrol and factory-fitted CNG options.
How safe is the Ertiga?
It offers up to six airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP and ISOFIX mounts. However, it has not been tested by Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP, so there is no official crash rating.
How much boot space does it have?
With all three rows up, boot space is limited to soft bags. Fold the third row and you get a large, flat load area suitable for big family trips.
